What is Rosh Chodesh?

Rosh Chodesh, literally the "Head of the Month," marks the beginning of every new month in the Jewish calendar. Since biblical times, this day has been celebrated as a minor festival, offering a welcome opportunity for reflection and spiritual renewal.

"Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your G-d." - Numbers 10:10

Traditionally, Rosh Chodesh is observed as a women's holiday. Women are traditionally exempt from labor on this day—a reward for refusing to give up their jewelry for the Golden Calf. Many modern communities have established special Rosh Chodesh women's groups.
